PBA Fights Wage Freeze in Court

BUFFALO 2006-07-07 Buffalo Police officers are going back to court in their on-going battle with the Buffalo control board.

PBA members met Thursday to talk about the continuing wage freeze on police officers and other city workers. PBA President Robert Meegan says despite the union's contract with the city, officers are being punished by the control board's wage freeze.

"It seems like the control board has it both ways. We're the only ones that comply with the terms and conditions of the contract and yet the city is not abiding by it's agreement with the PBA," Meegan said.

Union leaders say if the city and the control board can violate the state's Taylor Law and ignore the contract, the union should be allowed to strike.

Meegan says the wage freeze has cost the average officer with 20 years of service around $6,000 in pay.

Control board members have said they believe they have the authority to impose a wage freeze because of the city's dire fiscal situation.
