Letter To The Editor - Lead By Example, Governor Carcieri! |
| |
This letter appeared in the Providence Journal on April 3, 2006
It amazes me that Governor Carcieri is trying to legislate state employee benefits, rather than negotiating them. Most of us public employees have the privilege of serving the residents of the state, a town or a city. As public employees we earn and most likely negotiate our benefit packages.
Mr. Carcieri should start leading by example. Start with yourself and start working down the ladder, Mr. Carcieri. Please disclose to the public the top 50 administrators or department heads who work in state service, and what their benefit packages are, what the packages are worth, and what you are doing to save taxpayers money in this area.
To be a leader one has to lead by example! There are so many ways to save other than on the backs of state employees.
Recently House Finance Committee Chairman Steven Constantino asked Carcieri's director of administration, Beverly E. Najarian, why these changes in benefits hadn't been brought up in negotiations. Her answer was "We did not understand the severity of the budget situation."
One would have to assume that we as residents of this state do not have the right people running and leading this state in the right direction. One of the most powerful voices we as residents and employees have is the vote! Is it election time yet?
